Adhesion promoters (primers) are substances improving the adhesion between two phases, e. g. between a substrate and a coating. The effect of an adhesion promoter is based on sufficiently strong nonpolar, polar or covalent bonds towards both phases which are stronger than the interactions between the two phases. Applying adhesion promoters in combination with a plasma pre-treatment offers optimal opportunities to connect two phases, in particular in the stable activation of a surface.
