The adhesive strength of paint films on a substrate decisively influence their corrosion protection properties and resistance to mechanical influences. As a specific system property of the pair paint film/substrate, adhesive strength is mainly determined by interfacial microstructural forces. Since these forces are active in the range of atomic dimensions, faultless wetting of the substrate by the paint is a prerequisite for good adhesion. Improved surface morphology of the workpiece can improve adhesive strength through increased effective interface.
